Seersucker is a lightweight fabric that is usually made in 100% cotton, however, it can also be found in blended fabrics. It has a puckered texture that is typically striped, but also checked, that is traditionally used to make clothing for warm or hot weather. The word came to the English language from Hindustani (Urdu and Hindi), which comes from the Persian words "shir o shekar," meaning "milk and sugar," most likely comparing the fabrics alternating soft and coarse stripes to the contrasting textures of milk, being smooth, and sugar, being coarse.

A weaving process called slack-tension is used to create the distinctive characteristics of seersucker. The tension on several of the warp yarns are held tighter than others which result in a crinkled striped fabric which allows the fabric to be away from the skin when worn, allowing for easier air flow keeping the wearer cool since the warm air is not trapped close to the skin. In addition, the fabric is comfortable, easy to wash and requires little or no ironing.

Typical garments made from seersucker are summer suits, pants, shirts, bathrobes and chef jackets. Blue and white are the most common colors found in seersucker; however, it is made in a wide variety of colors, generally alternating color and white stripes which are somewhat wider than traditional pin stripes, but also can be plain, plaid, gingham (small checks), and a variety of printed designs.

History

Seersucker was very popular during the British colonial period in the tropical climates, and was used to make many different garments when it was first introduced in the United States around 1907. It was regarded as a summer foundation for a gentleman's attire, particularly for men's summer suits in the Southern climates where they favored the lightweight fabric during the hot and humid summer season. This was particularly true before air conditioning was introduced in the 1950s.

In the 1920s, poor people commonly wore seersucker, and many undergraduate students started wearing clothing made from seersucker in a way of being sympathetic towards them. The American writer Damon Runyon said that his practice for wearing clothes made from seersucker was "causing much confusion among my friends. They cannot decide whether I am broke or just setting a new vogue."

During World War II, the first female United States Marines wore seersucker for their summer service uniforms. Captain Anne A. Lentz, one of the original female officers chosen to head the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve (USMCWR) was the one who made this choice.

In 1996, Republican Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi began the tradition of Seersucker Thursday, where members of the US Congress dress in traditional Southern fashion, because he wanted to "bring a little Southern charm to the Capitol", as well as to remind them how they dressed before the introduction of air conditioning. The tradition was just recently discontinued in June 2012. women's jackets

Korto Momolu to Unveil First Ready-to-Wear Collection at New York Fashion Week SS13 September 7th

Some fashion industry insiders are speculating that fashion designer Korto Momolu may take a hiatus from New York Fashion Week to expand her brand globally. However, the finalist from Project Runway's fifth season is poised to unveil her best collection to date on Friday, September 7, 2012, at Helen Mills (139 West 26 Street, NY).

The Korto Momolu Spring/Summer 2013 collection is the first ready-to-wear collection for the designer. Fashion Stylist Arnold Milfort, who is producing this year's NYFW SS13 runway show says, "This collection is very refreshing. I think people are going to be surprised and inspired by what [Korto] has to show this season." Milfort was also instrumental in consulting Momolu during the design process. Capturing inspiration and comments from female focus groups was important to both Momolu and Milfort. This collection was designed with consideration of silhouettes, fabric selections and shapes for sizes 2 to12.

Momolu, who gained national recognition after participating on the fifth season of Project Runway, has presented a collection on the New York runways for the past four seasons. She is ready for this show and states, "this year has been an extraordinary year for me. This collection is a true representation of the path I am on. I am very excited and ready for the future."

Earlier this year, Korto teamed up with General Mills and ShopRite's year-round, hunger-fighting initiative, ShopRite Partners In Caring, as a celebrity judge for a T-shirt design contest, appropriately called "Knock Out Hunger." Additionally, Korto will appear on a special edition box of Cheerios that will be sold exclusively at ShopRite stores in September 2012. To further demonstrate her support in raising hunger awareness, she invited the grand prize winner of the T-shirt design contest to feature his winning design on her runway at fashion week.

Highlighted as a top 5 designer to watch by New York Magazine in 2010, and listed as "The Grio's Top 100" in 2012, Korto Momolu, a native of Liberia, West Africa, easily stands out from the rest and has captured the attention of the fashion industry elite. She has been featured in People magazine, Essence magazine, Women's Wear Daily, Soap Opera Digest, and will appear in American ELLE magazine this fall.

Another announcement to celebrate: Project Runway's 10th anniversary. One designer from each season was chosen to create an under-$350 look for Lord & Taylor. The capsule collection includes designs by season one's Jay McCarroll, favorites like Chris March and Nick Verreos, as well as Korto Momolu's $275 dollar design which will be available for purchase Friday, August 31st on http://www.lordandtaylor.com.

How To Choose The Wedding Ring Of Your Dreams

You've chosen the engagement ring of your dreams as well as the person of your dreams, now you have to choose a ring that compliments these choices. Selecting a wedding ring that matches your style and tells the world…"I'm taken and this rings proves it!" is no easy task. Especially since there are so many different choices for wedding rings today. To add to the challenge is the need to find a ring that looks just as beautiful as your engagement ring.

For the Gals

Once you've received your engagement ring you'll have much time to stare and daydream about a wedding band as equally beautiful as the ring he professed his love for you with. Our experience tells us that brides are very concerned about finding a perfect match and won't settle for anything that will detract or overpower the engagement ring. So it is crucial that a ring is chosen that has similar design elements as your engagement ring and fits nicely against it. Today's engagement ring designs can be quite elaborate which is great but it creates the problem of finding a nicely matched engagement ring. Unfortunately many jewelers don't have matching wedding rings available for their engagement rings although, you should always check with the jeweler your ring came from first to see if they have one available. What we've seen most is the difficulty in finding a ring that looks like it was made for your engagement ring and while not having spaces between the wedding band and the engagement ring. There are 3 approaches to solving these problems when choosing your wedding ring.

First Approach – Choosing a band that looks good with your ring but not alone

If you've received a ring that has multiple diamonds or has an intricate and unique design you may have experienced a problem finding a band. In an effort to get your wedding ring to fit together you may choose a contoured ring, or a wrap. A contoured ring is a band that has been specially designed to gently curve to the contoured profiles of today's most popular engagement ring styles. Unfortunately, a contoured ring will not look good on its own and if you plan on wearing your wedding ring on it's own you may be displeased with the way it looks by itself. If you are most concerned about a perfect fit against your engagement ring and won't wear the wedding band alone then a contoured ring may be best for you.

If you have a solitaire engagement ring and you would like to spruce it up with your wedding ring then a wrap could be great. A wrap is designed to fit nicely around your diamond and over the top of the sides of your ring. Most designs have a series of diamond or gemstone accents set with rounds, princess cuts and baguettes. There are many choices to choose from and most people are successful at choosing a wrap that works will with their ring. There are 2 important things to consider with a wrap; most wraps won't fit perfectly out of the case, and wraps can't be worn by themselves. With slight adjustments to the wrap most of them will fit nicely on your engagement ring. Make sure you choose a jeweler who has a skilled jeweler in house to do the work for you.

Second Approach – Choosing a band that looks great alone but does not have an exact fit

Some solitaires have an area on the side where the head meets the ring that protrudes out and prevents the wedding ring from resting against the engagement setting. If you choose a traditional straight band because you want to wear it alone you may have problems with the band hitting against the head. This will create spacing and between both ring and you may become annoyed with that. It's a trade off women's coats at this point, you'll have to decide what is more important to you and only you can make that decision. You can circumvent that by choosing a wedding ring that has a low profile to it and allow for the wedding ring to rest slightly below the head minimizing spacing. Channel bands are a great choice in this situation because they generally have a low profile to allow for a proper fit. A channel band also looks fantastic when worn alone.

Third Approach – When all else fails make a custom ring

In some situations you'll never find a wedding band that looks good with your engagement ring. When this happens some people elect to have a custom designed wedding ring made. Custom work allows you to have a say in what the wedding ring will look like and ca give you the best of all worlds. Most custom work begins with you describing to a jeweler what it is that you want out of a wedding ring. You then have the opportunity to share the things that you like about your engagement ring and the jeweler can explain to you how he will compliment those features on your ring. Some jewelers will sketch a concept for you then create a prototype to see as a wax model. More advanced jewelers will use a computer aided design tool to create an image for you to see on a computer screen. The wax model will demonstrate the fit and accuracy of the wedding ring with your engagement ring. It can also be altered with great ease and without incurring added costs. You should be very careful when choosing a jeweler to make you a custom ring because as with any craft there are skilled experts and there are hacks. There is nothing worse than investing hard earned money on something that is poorly made or that improperly interprets your desires. A good rule of thumb is to ask to see a portfolio of the jewelers work or ask to speak to the goldsmith personally to get a feeling of his aptitude for custom work.

For the Guys

Men are not used to wearing rings or jewelry for that matter so the thought of wearing a wedding ring scares them. For some men it is uncomfortable and other men are concerned the ring may look girly or not masculine enough. If careful consideration takes place there should be no problem in finding a wedding ring that works with your active lifestyle and fits with your personality. Today there is a wide array of metals choices and styles available and you are sure to find a wedding ring that will satisfy all your needs.

One option you may consider is ordering your ring with a comfort fit. This will provide a soft smooth feel when wearing the ring while making the ring more durable. Creating a slight dome using metal on the inside of the ring where the finger is placed forms a comfort fit. This dome softens the edges of the ring so nothing digs into the finger; it also prevents much of the metal on the inside of the ring from coming in contact with the finger.

Your lifestyle should be taken in account when choosing a metal type for your wedding ring. If you work with your hands and don't plan on taking your ring off then you may choose the harder metals available like titanium or tungsten. Titanium is very lightweight, comfortable to wear and holds up well over time. Tungsten is the hardest metal on the planet and is basically scratch proof. The finish should also be considered when finalizing your decision; most wedding ring styles are available in multiple finishes. Some finishes hold up better than others under harsh conditions. A heavy brush or stone finish will show less wear and most scratches will not be easily seen. On the other hand a satin finish or a sand blasted finish will highlight even the smallest of scratches. Have your jeweler demonstrate the different finishes to you before you make your final decision.

If you don't work with your hands or you don't think you'll damage the ring then you make want to consider some of the more precious metals available. White gold, yellow gold, platinum, and palladium offer a much richer look than the hard metals. You'll also find a much greater selection of wedding ring styles to choose from in the precious metal family because they are more malleable and easier to craft. You'll also have the added benefit of owning a ring that is more valuable because of the precious metal content.

Take care when selecting the finger size to order your wedding ring in. Many people lose their wedding rings in the ocean while on their honeymoon. This occurs because men are not used to wearing rings so they go with a more loose fit because they think it will feel more comfortable. The ring is too big and then it slips off in the surf. The truth is that a ring will bother you less when it fits more snug then when it is too big. When the ring is too big it will constantly be turning on your finger and this will bother you. If the ring is snug you will notice less turning and the snug fit will prevent you from loosing it. To determine the proper finger size use a ring sizer that is the same width as the ring you are ordering. If you use a finger sizer that is 2.5mm wide and your wedding ring is 7mm there will be a difference in the type of fit. This will cause you to pick an incorrect finger size. Remember that a little tighter is always better than a littler looser.

Horse Breeds: Clydesdale Horse, Colorado Rangerbred, Connemara Pony, Criollo, Crioulo, Dales Pony

*CLYDESDALE HORSE*

The Clydesdale Horse, a very large and beautiful breed of horse. Founded in a Scotland district and named for the Lankarkshire area, in which flows the River Clyde, this breed was typically used for agricultural work, as well as coal fields and haulage on Glasgow streets.

As an active horse, they must constantly be doing something, even with its large size and weight. The Clydesdale Horse weighs somewhere around 1600 pounds to 1800 pounds, standing between 16.2 hands and 18 hands. This magnificent horse can reach the weight of 2200 pounds for some stallions.

Clydesdales are typically a bay color, though throughout the coat, you may find chestnut, brown, or black as well. Their knees and hocks are typically white on all four legs, with a bald or defined face. Clydesdales are known for being a serviceable horse, great for pleasure, showing, or even work. They are a stylish and very intelligent breed of horse.

*COLORADO RANGERBRED*

Originating in the High Plains of Colorado, the Colorado Rangerbred is of its own heritage, even though it appears to be a descendent of the Appaloosa, it is unique all to its own. Generally bred and used for their capabilities of performance and their cow savvy, they were developed by a gentleman named Mike Ruby, the founder of the CRHA (The Colorado Ranger Horse Association).

The Colorado Ranger Horse comes in a variety of different colors. With spots and various skin pigmentation. The name Colorado Rangers, comes from the fact that the horses are bred in conditions on the range, or range conditions.

*CONNEMARA PONY*

The exact origin of the Connemara Pony is not driven by facts. Some people believe they are a descendent of the Spanish horse, while other believe that they derive from Ireland. In 1920, those wishing the preserve the breeds' purity formed the CPBS (Connemara Pony Breeders Society).

The Connemara Pony has rounded shoulders, ample boned legs, that are both clean and short. They have an abundant tail and main, with a lean neck and handsome head. They carry bodies that are deep and compact, but not bulky in any way. They typically stand somewhere around 12.2 hands or 14.2 hands. Though they are small horses, they are superb jumpers and hunters.

The coloring of the Connemara Pony is typically dun. Though while abundant at one time, is becoming more rare with each passing year. Now, they are usually found in colors of grey, and occasionally in browns, bay, or black coloring.

*CRIOLLO*

The Spanish introduced the Criollo to the Americas by bringing Spanish horses and cross breeding them with other breeds. The Criollo horse is extremely adaptive to many different environments and weather elements. They are at their best when living in the open air, as this is a product of their breeding.

Thought to derive from Uruguay, the Criollo horse stands between 1.40 meters and 1.50 meters. It is generally used to work on farms, but pleasure and drafting is also a popular use in the modern world.

*CRIOULO*

A Brazilian horse, the Crioulo was developed in Brazil, in a region called Rio Grande do Sul. As a descendant of the Criollo, it is the region's native horse.

*DALES PONY*

The Dales Pony, a native of the England area of Northern Yorkshire, is an variety of the Wilson Pony, Norfolk Trotter, The Galloway, and the Pennine Pony. Typically the Dales Pony is used as a pack pony, having the ability to carry heavy weight while navigating rough country sides. They are also commonly used for farm work, since they have a small size, being able to function where a large horse may have troubles.

Even small as they are, the Dales Pony is fast and stylish, winning trotting race, serving the army, and excellent hunting horses. They stand at around 14.2 hands. They have neat heads, straight hair manes, a muscular neck, and sloping shoulders. The Dale Pony carries a great deal of stamina and perfect for riding as they are extremely steady, used to carrying weights. They are calm horses, but generally make great horses for an adult or an adolescent.

The Dales Pony is predominantly black, with several other colors such as roan, bay, grey, or bro fashion jackets online wn. They excel in many areas, such as marathons, plowing, or dressage.

5. Heat the stock to boiling. Add the MSG (optional) and the remaining 1/4 tsp. salt. Pour the stock over the cabbage rolls and serve.

Chinese Honey Sesame Tenderloin

1/2 cup soy sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 Tbs. fresh ginger, grated or 1 tsp. dry ginger
1 Tbs. sesame oil
1 lb. boneless pork tenderloin chops, whole
1/4 cup honey
2 Tbs. brown sugar
1/4 cup sesame seeds

Combine first 4 ingredients in a bowl. Place tenderloin in a heavy plastic bag and pour soy mixture over to coat. Secure bag tightly. Marinate 2 hours at room temperature, or overnight in refrigerator. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Remove pork from marinade and pat dry. Discard marinade. Mix together honey and brown sugar in a shallow plate. Place sesame seeds on a separate shallow plate. Roll pork in honey mixture, coating well. Then roll in sesame seeds. Place tenderloin in a shallow roasting pan and roast about 25 minutes per 1 lb., until a meat thermometer reads 160 degrees F. Remove to a serving platter, slice thinly.

If you wish to freeze cooked meat: Cool quickly in refrigerator to retain freshness. Leave meat whole or slice and place the amounts you will use at one time in freezer/oven-proof containers or on sheets of aluminum foil. Seal tightly. If using foil, wrap and fold edges to seal and place on a flat baking sheet (to preserve shape) and place in freezer until frozen. Then you can remove baking sheet and place package where you wish in the freezer. Freeze up to 6 months. To reheat: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place meat in oven and bake until hot. Please remember that USDA recommends reheating meats to 165 degrees F to destroy any bacteria.

How To Name Your Cat With Ease

Pet cats hold a very special place in the hearts of their women's coats owners. Wouldn't it be nice to give a pet cat the loveliest name one can think of? Wouldn't it be great to give a pet cat a name that would reflect its personality as seen by the one who owns it or a name which would give recognition to the cat's breed? There are actually a lot of names to choose from in books or in the internet. But generally, how can an owner choose a name which he will find fit for his cat?

Many cat owners name their pet cats with human names. Actually, a whopping fifty percent of pet names are those of persons. This primarily is because there are owners who are enamored with a certain name and actually desire to christen someone, or something for that matter, with that favorite name.

Another basis for names is personality or appearance. In this category, examples are Midnight (should the pet be a black cat), Fluffy (obviously, if the cat is fluffy or has long, soft and bouncy coat) and Whitey (of course, if the cat is white). Pet names based on appearances or personality make up an amazing twenty percent of all pet names. However, unlike human infants where the parents can opt to wait for a few weeks to see the baby's personality before naming the child, cats must be named more quickly.

So how does an owner actually name his pet cat? Here are some tips which cat owners can give some thought.

First off, keep in mind that the name that the owner chooses for his pet cat will not only reflect the cat's character but also how the owner views his relationship with his pet cat. As much as it says a lot about the cat, the name given by the owner will tell much about the owner himself. It can then be seen how the name can portray an image of the characteristics of the cat. Many cat names give either a positive or negative impression of the cat. So, it is important to choose a name which will best convey the proper image of the pet.

A cat's name is for keeps. No matter which name the owner chooses, the cat's name should be that for the rest of his life. It is absolutely not fair to change the cat's name every two weeks just because the owner finds another name he thinks he might prefer. If the cat already recognizes the sound of its name it should not be changed.

Although the cat won't mind any name its owner may wish to use, it is just not fair to give the cat an embarrassing name. While the cat would not mind being named "Ooga Booga", it would be embarrassing for the owner to actually use this name. Imagine a person calling out "Ooga Booga" at least eight times a day every time he is looking for his cat. The cat's owner should find his pet a name which he will be proud to use. Also please remember to pick a name which will be appropriate when your cat is full-grown. A large tabby cat with a silly name like Mimi or Kitten seems ridiculous.

A name with two syllables will do best. The response of animals is better to two-syllable names. A cat owner may decide to give his pet a long name as well as a nick name. However, the longer name inevitably would be shortened, and this would probably ruin the effect the cat owner originally sought.

The cat's breed heritage may provide great ideas for names. For instance, if the cat owner owns a Siamese cat, why not name it Siam? If the cat is a Russian Blue, it would be nice to give it a Russian-sounding or Russian inspired name such as Sofia or Chekov.

Speaking of inspiration, there are a lot of things out there from which you can gain inspiration. As was said earlier, the name the owner gives his cat will speak just as much about himself. So why not pick a name for the cat which is derived from the owner's likes, hobbies and favorites? If the owner were passionate about world history, maybe the names Isis, Genghis, Voltaire or Osiris would sound very classy. If the owner were an avid fan of the Greek mythology the names Zeus, Athena, Hercules or Jason would be sure to make a good first impression on other people.

On the more contemporary side, names of characters from favorite movies, cartoon series, TV programs or bands will do just as well. Huey, Louie and Duey would sound cute as well as Bonnie and Clyde. A more posh touch would be naming your cat after signature designers. Tommy, Donna, Karan, Calvin and Gianni would not sound so bad for cats--just as long as they are well groomed as their names imply. Naming cats is not the easiest task there is, honestly. But it can be a lot of fun if these considerations and suggestions are always kept in mind. Then no doubt, that perfect name will come easily. Wouldn't it be great for an owner to call his pet cat a name which is close to his heart and a name he will be proud to call out no matter what time of the day?

Fashion Basics: Caring for Ties

Neckties are some of the pricier (on a per length basis) and more delicate parts of a man's wardrobe, yet they're also some of the most often mistreated. Too many men today have little to no idea about how to properly care for their neckwear, without realizing that it's a key piece to achieving any sort of formal style. Do you do enough to care for your ties?

Usage
Since you already own a necktie, it's probably no stretch to assume that you know how to tie it. One equally important skill, though, is knowing how to untie the four-in-hand or whatever style you use in the morning.

One of the worst habits that a lot of men have is not untying the knot before hanging up the tie for the night. Remember that knotting it up puts the fabric into a tight, unnatural bunched arrangement. If you don't undo that knot and relieve the pressure on the fabric, you can bet that there'll be creases on the tie the next morning. And unless you know how to do the knot exactly the same way, those creases will show all throughout the day.

Be aware that using accessories like pins and bars also have an effect on the longevity of any necktie. Pins, in particular, speed up the fuzzing and deterioration of the fabric since they perforate the surface every time they're installed. The effect, however, shouldn't be enough to dissuade you from using these stylish, gentlemanly accessories altogether.

Storage
Instead of yanking the tie off and over your head, remove the whole knot and then lie the whole thing flat first if you're not going to store it right away. Classic silk or polyester ties ought to be kept on a hanger, there are small space saving ones made just for them, or a rack. Letting them hang down overnight means that gravity will solve some of the less problematic creases by the time your alarm sounds the next morning.

Knit ties, meanwhile, require a different strategy. Knits have a tendency to women's jackets sag, which is why sweaters and vests are best kept folded in a drawer instead of on a hanger. The same applies to your neckties. For knits, roll them up and store them in a drawer or area where they won't experience a lot of pressure. This prevents gravity from doing its worst, while at the same time straightening out the fabric for the next time you'll knot it up.

Pressure is the biggest enemy if you're bringing ties along in your luggage. To minimize creases and wrinkles, roll up the length and stow it in a protective pocket such as your shoes or the pockets in the inside of your coat. A hard plastic case is also an alternative.

Maintenance
Here's where things can get tricky. Ties easily get creased, wrinkled and dirtied because they see so much action throughout the course of the day. At the same time, their fabrics and construction make them too delicate to be regularly handled with heat or cleansers.

Steam is the secret ingredient to get all those kinks and creases out. If hanging overnight didn't do the trick, a little work with a steam iron should. Remember to keep the surface of the iron away from the fabric; you want just the hot steam getting into the silk to get the wrinkles out. A dedicated steaming device, available for rent at most business hotels, would be ideal for the task, but a steam iron can work just as well.

If you ever find yourself in a stain emergency with your tie, try to remove the offending substance as quick as possible while minimizing additional contact with the cloth. If it's a liquid, pick up a dry or damp (never wet) cloth and apply it to the spot without rubbing. This should leach off the worst of the stain. Even if the mark goes, though, be sure to send the tie to specialized tie cleaners and let them do their magic on the delicate fabric.

Life Expectancy of Home Items - Get More From Your Home

Every homebuyer knows that buying a home is expensive. But what homebuyers need to be aware of is that owning a home after the purchase is costly as well.

Not only are there monthly payments such as the mortgage and the insurance on the home but there are also maintenance expenses that need to be taken into consideration.

While many buyers may be baffled at trying to determine just how much it will cost them, it's helpful to know the life expectancy of some home items. This will provide the homeowner with a general idea of when things will need to be repaired or replaced and how much it will cost them.

Foundations: A foundation that is made from poured concrete block footings should last for eighty to one hundred years. This is also true for slab foundations. Termite proofing, which is applied to the foundation generally lasts for twelve years. A waterproofing coat that contains b women's jackets ituminous coating will last for ten years.

Flooring: Wood flooring will last the longest, about one hundred years with proper care and maintenance. The same is true for marble, slate, and granite floors but these also need care. Vinyl floors will last fifty years, linoleum will stay in good shape for twenty-five years and carpet has the shortest life span, with only about eight to ten years.

Electrical Systems: The actual structure of an electrical system such as wiring that is copper plated, copper clad aluminum, and bare copper wiring will be good for one hundred years. However, things like outlets and light switches will need to be replaced after ten years.

Outside Materials: There are many components outside the home that may or may not need replacing. The actual materials used to build the home such as brick, vinyl, wood, or stone will stay with the house for its lifetime.

Wood shutters will last for twenty years, the amount of time gutters last will depend on what they are made from. Copper can last up to fifty years while aluminum will only last about twenty. The same is true for downspouts as well. Copper will last one hundred years and aluminum will last about thirty.

Doors: Outdoor doors that are constructed from wood, steel, or fiberglass will last about one hundred years. Screen and vinyl doors can last anywhere from twenty to forty years. Closet doors will generally also last for one hundred years and French doors have thirty to fifty years of life in them.

Windows: If the homeowner wants the window to last for as long as possible, wood is the way to go, as they last twice as long as other types.

HVAC Systems: These systems need very careful care and maintenance. Furnaces have twenty years max, heat pumps have fifteen or sixteen years, and air conditioners only have ten to fifteen years. Tankless gas water heaters are best as they will last about twenty years.

Appliances: If homeowners want to keep their appliances for their lifetime, gas stoves will last about fifteen years. Dryers and refrigerators only have about thirteen years and dishwashers and microwaves have the shortest lifespan with only nine years.

Roofing: Typically slate, copper, clay, and concrete roofs are best with life spans of fifty years. Wood shake roofs last about thirty years, fiber cement shingles are good for twenty-five years, and asphalt shingles will deteriorate the most quickly at about twenty years.

Dog Separation Anxiety

One of the greatest joys of dog ownership is the tight bond we experience and encourage with our dogs. However, if your dog becomes too reliant or dependant on you, dog separation anxiety can develop.

Dog Separation Anxiety is an enormous problem to an estimated 10% of all puppy's and older dogs. Somewhat ironically, it is the major cause for dogs ending up in animal shelters. I wish I could say dog separation anxiety is easily fixed , but the truth is it can be a very difficult and time consuming problem to turn around.

Let's take a look at separation anxiety from your dogs perspective. You are the most important thing in your dogs life. Dogs are very sociable creatures and thrive on company for many reasons. If your dog had a choice he/she would spend every bit of his time with you. So it's only natural that when you go out, your dog can experience varying degrees of distress and anxiety. He becomes confused, vulnerable, doesn't know where you are going, why he can't be with you and if you will be coming back to him. When you are separated all he wants is to be reunited with his pack - which is you.

Punishment is never the answer to treating dog separation anxiety!

Does Your Dog Suffer From Separation Anxiety?

There's every chance your dog is suffering from a Separation Anxiety disorder rather than another dog behavior problem if:

1. Your dog gets really worked up and anxious when you are preparing to leave the house. Things like picking up your car keys or putting on your coat can trigger the behavior.

2. Your dog engages in inappropriate behavior only when you are separated. I expand on this topic further down the page, but behavior such as urinating inside, excessive barking and destructive behavior are common symptoms of Separation Anxiety in dogs.

3. Your dog follows you everywhere you go and immediately becomes distressed if he can't be near you.

4. When you arrive home your dog is over the top with his greeting and takes a while to calm down.

Why Do Dogs Suffer From Separation Anxiety?

There are many theories on this one. In some cases the cause or trigger can be pinpointed to a particular event, but often there appears to be no explanation for the Separation Anxiety to commence. What I can say is that Separation Anxiety in dogs regularly occurs:

- Straight after a change in routine. Such as your work hours changing or a family member leaves home. Remember dogs are creatures of habit and any changes can be very unsettling to them.

- If you have been on vacation or unemployed for some time and have been spending heaps of time with your dog. When you go back to work your dog becomes anxious and distressed.

- Unfortunately dog's rescued from animal shelters contribute a highly disproportionate number of Separation Anxiety cases.

- After your dog experiences a traumatic event while on his own. If a thunderstorm lashes your home while your dog is alone, this can trigger Separation Anxiety in the future.

- If your dog is rarely left alone and becomes overly reliant on his pack.

- When you move house to a new neighbourhood.

How Does Dog Separation Anxiety Manifest Itself?

- Barking
- Whining
- Licking
- Destructive Behavior
- Chewing
- Howling
- Panic Attacks
- Digging
- Inappropriate Urinating
- House Soiling
- Self Mutilation
- Escaping
- Diarrhea
- Loss Of Appetite
- Excessive Salivation
- Vomiting
- Jumping Through Windows
- Crying

What Can You Do To Help Your Dog Overcome Separation?

The treatment administered to your dogs separation anxiety problem depends on its severity. You will find lots of theories and suggestions regarding the correct way to treat separation anxiety - I'll just inform you of what's worked for me.

The 4 Step Program I Used To Fix My Dalmation's Separation Anxiety Problem

My dalmation Harrison developed Separation Anxiety seemingly for no reason when he was about 7 years old. He would start digging and crying as soon as I left the house, even if my other family members were home. My Veterinarian suggested this training process, it achieved the desired result but took plenty of time and patience.

Aside from the 4 step program listed below, I continued to practice the general day to day duties of responsible dog ownership. By this I mean things like providing a safe and comfortable bed, plenty of exercise and obedience training.

Harry would start to get anxious (his whole body would shake) at the very first sign of me leaving the house. This typically would be putting my shoe's on or turning off the TV or heater. It became a real problem for Harry, myself and the rest of my family, this is how we eventually solved it:

Step 1

Since Harry was always by my side when I was home I had to slowly teach him that he didn't always need to be close to me. I started out by ignoring his attention seeking behavior (jumping up, barking etc.) and then did some solid practice of his down stay. Little by little we extended the time and distance we spent apart, until he was happy to be alone for up to 30 minutes. Of course, we still spent lots of fun time together.

Step 2

The next step was to get him used to being outside when I was women's jackets inside. Again we started off with very small periods apart and gradually lengthened the time over a couple of weeks. If you try this Separation Anxiety treatment make sure that you don't just leave your dog outside to get all worked up and stressed. The trick is to start out leaving your dog out for a few seconds, then going out and reuniting before he shows any signs of Separation Anxiety. Give your dog a treat or dog toy to keep his mind off missing you. Only initiate contact with your dog when he is calm and quiet.

Step 3

The next step in fixing Harry's Separation Anxiety problem was to eliminate the distress caused by me getting ready to leave the house for work. What I did was write a list of all the triggers that started Harry's anxiety. I then set about desensitizing him to these triggers. I'd put my shoe's on, and not go anywhere. Put my coat on, then sit down to read the paper. Pick up my car keys and just carry them around with me, jangling along as I went about my business. After a while (about 3 weeks) Harry barely offered a sideways glance at my shenanigans.

Step 4

When Harry was completely calm in situations that would have unsettled him in the past, I left the house. At first I just stepped outside, shut the door and came back inside within 20 seconds - before he made a sound. Again this was a slow process, similar to step 2. I extended the time outside the front door and then graduated to starting the car, then driving around the block before I came back inside. You can provide a tasty treat to your dog on your way out the door, something that he can work on for a while. Harry's favorite was a frozen Kong stuffed full of peanut butter and a few liver treats, this eventually kept him occupied for hours. Remember that when you return home, don't make a huge fuss. Come inside, get changed, pour yourself a nice hot coffee, then greet your calm dog.

This process did prove effective for me and my anxious dalmation. All up the 4 steps took about 5 weeks to work through and fix Harry's Separation Anxiety problem. My Vet suggested that I supplement this training with some medication. I didn't go down that path, but it would have been my next step if required.

Whichever method you choose to treat dog separation anxiety, be sure to stick with it and don't expect any immediate results.

Can A Rapist Be Reformed?

Taylor was a convicted rapist. He served nine years in prison for the crime. He was originally sentenced to 15 years but a number of things such as overcrowding led the system to release him early. He had lots of time to think about the crime and the life he destroyed. He swore to himself, that he would never do anything like that again.

He even wanted to start going to church. When he got out of jail he decided to move to the country and open up a lawn cutting business. He knew it would be difficult if not impossible to get any employment in the city given his record. In the country, he would be miles away from his neighbors and his recognition as a sex offender would be less visible.

He bought a small house with a loan from one of his relatives and setup the business. The business required him to go from house to house. He figured it was all right since none of the people knew him. He purchased some used equipment and starting cutting lawns. He had many different clients. One client was a young lady named Ginger, who had divorced a year ago.

She lived alone and did not care for yard work. She was planning to eventually move to an apartment in a city. She hired Taylor to take care of her yard in the mean time. She was very friendly and trusting. He was careful not become personally involved with her.

He knew the old feeling of domination and control might surface and cause him to commit a crime. Yet he could not stop thinking about her. He became very familiar with the layout of her yard and her home. He tried to remember his promise not to rape.

His thoughts of her became very intense. He finally had to drop her as a client for fear that he might rape again. A couple of weeks passed. He still found himself driving pass her house on the way to other clients. One day he convinced himself that he should stop in and say hello, even though she was not a client. He went to her house knocked on the door.

She was familiar with him, so she opened the door. At that moment, something came over him. He pushed the door open and she fell to the floor. He was out of control. He tied her up and was about to move her to one of the back rooms. The Sheriff in the area always made his rounds at the same time everyday. He would check the neighbors yards for suspicious activity.

He came upon her yard and saw the equipment parked outside but no one cutting grass. He thought it was odd, so he parked his car down the road and walked up to the house. He looked in one of the windows and saw Ginger tied up.

He knew he had to help her. He also saw Taylor, but he did not see any weapons. He knew he had a chance to take him down. He burst in the back door and apprehended the criminal. He untied Ginger and hauled the rapist to jail.

Many experts believe that rapists can not be reformed. They have some form of disorder that can not be corrected. They believe that the rap women's jackets ist can go on for years without committing a crime but they are not reformed. Experts believe, when the buttons are pushed they will commit as similar crime again. Some experts believe that this accompanied by the rightfully deserved stigma placed on them by society makes reform impossible.

There are rapists living in or near many communities in the United States. The offender registry system makes some of them visible but is not infallible. You must use all resources available to know where these individuals are located. Always have a plan to defend yourself if necessary.

The Pomeranian Of Today Make Good Professional Therapy Dogs

The Pomeranian is a toy-sized member of the German Spitz family of dogs. Some of the Pomeranian?€?s relatives include the Samoyed, Keeshond, Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Norwegian Elkhound, Finnish Spitz, Chow Chow and American Eskimo.

The Pomeranian had ancestors who were used by the Nordic people as sled pulling dogs and to herd reindeer. Of course, these ancestors were much larger than our present day Pomeranian.

Today?€?s Pomeranian is well suited to city and suburban households. They are alert and highly intelligent, very active little dogs, which are easily trained. Many Pomeranians successfully compete in obedience, agility, tracking and flyball.

You won?€?t see a 3 to 7 pound Pomeranian pulling a sled in Iceland or herding reindeer. That would certainly be a spectacular event, but it is very doubtful the little Pomeranians of today are hired to do such jobs as these. The Pomeranians we know today have indoor jobs as therapy dogs. They make excellent therapy dogs while visiting the sick and elderly in hospitals and nursing homes. It is my personal opinion that the ministers need to take along a little Pom while making their rounds visiting the sick and elderly in hospitals and nursing homes.

The Pomeranian is a compact, short-backed toy dog with a soft, dense undercoat and a profuse harsh-textured outer coat. He has a heavily plumed tail set high that lies flat on his back. The Pomeranian looks kind of ?€?cocky,?€?commanding, and animated as he moves around.

The average size of the Pomeranian is from 3 to 7 pounds. The American Pomeranian Club does not like the Pomeranian to be referred to as ?€?teacup?€?or ?€?toy.?€?The ideal weight for a show specimen is 4 to 6 pounds, although the American Pomeranian Club says poorly bred Pomeranians will many times be overweight, and any dog over the limits is highly objectionable. The Pomeranian is medium-boned and when examined feels sturdy. He has an interesting looking plumed tail, which is one of the characteristics of his breed. The Pomeranian?€?s eyes are also of interest as almond-shaped, dark, bright, and medium in size.

The little Pomeranian has a vivacious spirit about him making him a great competitive dog. He is an extrovert in personality.

The Pomeranian was most likely bred down in the present day Germany and women's coats Poland. When the Pomeranian was first noticed in Britain in the middle of the 19th century, some specimens were said to weigh as much as 30 pounds and resembled the German Wolf Spitz in size, coat and color. These 30 pound dogs were most likely the sled dogs.

A Pomeranian named ?€?Marco?€?was sent from Florence, Italy to the Queen Victoria of England. Marco became Queen Victoria?€?s beloved pet. Because of the Queen was a popular monarch, the breed?€?s popularity grew. Queen Victoria is known for advocating the trend toward the smaller Pomeranians.

The small size Pomeranian with its docile temperament and vivacious spirit helps to make this little dog an ideal and entertaining companion.

The colors and patterns of the Pomeranian are many. Among the colors are black and tan ?€" tan or rust sharply defined, appearing above each eye and on muzzle, throat, and fore chest, on all legs and feet and below the tail. The richer the tan is more desirable. Brindle ?€" the base color is gold, red, or orange-brindled with strong lack cross stripes. Parti-color is white with any other color distributed in patches with a white blaze preferred on the head. The Open Classes at specialty shows may be divided by color as follows: Open Red, Orange, Cream, and Sable; Open Black, Brown, and Blue; Open Any Other Color, Pattern, or Variation.

The larger size Pomeranian that once pulled sleds in Iceland surely worked hard for its masters. Today, our little 6 pound Pomeranians are happily performing more professional positions such as therapy dogs for sick and the elderly. He is an ideal companion for the adult, and not so highly recommend for children.

Briard Puppy And Dog Information

The Briard is a large, powerful dog with the shaggy dog look. She makes a good watch dog and a good guard dog. She loves her human family and is intelligent and fairly easy to train. She needs quite a bit of grooming and attention to keep her coat healthy and looking good.

*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male briard is 24 to 27 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 75 to 90 pounds. The female ranges from 22 to 25 inches to the withers and 75 to 85 pounds.

*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Briard is no exception. Keep on the look out for canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), progressive retinal atrophy (inherited disease of the retina that can cause vision loss and blindness), cataracts, stomach torsion and bloat (Gastric Dilation-Volvulus, the second leading killer of dogs, can kill within the hour, this space is too limited for a complete explanation but you should read up on this). Feeding more then once a day and avoiding exercise right after meals may help guard against bloat. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

*Grooming. The Briard has a coarse, dry and hard coat in long, waving locks. She needs extensive grooming to look good and avoid mats. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and also help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with your pet. Her pads of her feet need excess hair removed.

Her ears should be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have her professionally groomed, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should get in the dogs ears, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Ear cleaning is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, excess wax, or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, foul odor or she seems to be in distress and you suspect an infection, or tumor, consult your veterinarian.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her nails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

*Life Span. The Briard can live between 10 and 12 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

*History. The Briard is from France and descended from some of the oldest dogs. It is believed that Emperor Charlemagne had them some 1200 years ago. Thomas Jefferson may have been the original importer of the Briard to America. She was first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1928.

Chinese Shar-Pei Dog Breed Profile

The Chinese Shar Pei was at one time called the "Chinese Fighting Dog". It is most likely that it originated from a cross between the Mastiff and the Chow Chow and various indigenous breeds. In actual practice, the Shar Pei served several purposes.. It was used in china as a "pit" fighting dog, for entertainment and sport and also as a hunting dog and a herding breed and a watchdog. The dog originated, it is believed, in the Han Dynasty and the many statues of that era which depict the fierce fighting dogs with the scowl on their faces are believed to be representations of the Shar Pei.

The exceedingly loose skin that is the hallmark of the breed was its biggest advantage when pitted against other dogs, there was so much skin that it was difficult for a dog or any animal for that matter to get a grip or do serious damage to any vital organs. Eventual women's jackets ly their use as a pit fighting breed diminished, because they simply did not ever posses the mentality or attitude to be a fighter. Most Shar Peis appear, to this day, to be rather disinterested in other animals.

In the 1940s, when the Communist Party came to power in China, dogs as pets were considered to be "decadent bourgeois luxury" and the breeding of dogs for pets was eventually completely banned. Many of the breeds of China very nearly became extinct during this period. A few remaining Shar Pei specimens somehow made it out out to the West at some point and the breed has been gaining in popularity ever since.

The standard of the breed, as translated from Chinese, reads that the head should be "pear-like" and the ears "like a clamshell" . The nose is to be like a butterfly, the face like that of a grandma, the legs like the shape of a ham, the back like that of the shrimp, the tail like that of a wire, the body like that of a fish...and so on. Suffice it to say that the Chinese Shar Pei bears little resemblance to any other breed. Indeed, the wrinkles alone are unique to say nothing of its strange looking face. It does possess the dark blue or purple tongue similar to the Chow Chow but that is about the only resemblance.

The Shar Pei can have eye problems, (known as entropion or ectropion) a condition where the eyelids roll inwards or outwards. This is a condition which can be corrected surgically. Because of the heavy rolls of skin and the wrinkles on the face even corrective surgery does not always have the desired result and this is a problem that owners should watch for. The Shar Pei possesses a rather "prickly" and harsh coat which seems to have the feel of the coat of a horse, actually. Its deep wrinkles and rather lumbering body remind one of the hippopotamus in some respects. The face of the Shar Pei seems to bear a perpetual "scowl" and it is part of the look of the famous Han Dynasty dog statues which were said to depict the original Shar Pei breed.

The Shar Pei has gained some popularity in the west because of its strange looks and rather endearing wrinkles as a puppy. However it grows up to be an aloof and independent dog, with a great deal of dignity and not necessarily the playful sort. It has however proved itself to be a beloved companion to many folks who treasure the dog for its quiet and dignified manner and for its noble demeanor.

Doberman Pinscher Dog Breed Information

Dobermans are most recognizable as being black and tan in color but they can also come in blue and fawn but these colors are disqualifications in dog shows, there is also a rare white (albino) Doberman. They are a medium to large dog standing up to 20 inches tall, although there is no strict standard weight, they should not weigh more than 110lbs and should not weigh less as their size can determine their strength. They have long, straight and muscular legs that should be parallel and strong, they also have a long neck and face, by breed standards they should also have the characteristic spots above their eyes, which look almost like eyebrows. Their coat should be short and glossy to look at. Dobermans are very elegant to look at, and often have their tails docked and their ears cropped which have come to be part of their most well known characteristics. However, in most countries both these practices have been banned.

History. The Doberman to this day is credited to a man named Louis Dobermann, he was a tax collector in Germany and developed the breed to use as his guard dog, he used a verity of dogs that each had unique traits that he wanted for his 'new' dog. Although which breeds he used for certain are not completely known, it is known that he used a Rottweiler, a Great Dane, a Manchester Terrier, a Greyhound and the German Sheppard. There are also a few other breeds thought to be in the Dobermans heritage but it's not certain. Louis Doberman first started work on the breed in the late 1800's and in 1889 they were officially recognized by the German Kennel Club. They were often used as police dogs and also tracking dogs, the breed developed in America after the 1st World War as many American soldiers became so attached to the breed they took them home with them.

Temperament. Unfortunately, Dobermans have a reputation for being an aggressive attack dog, however this is not the dogs fault and the blame for an overly aggressive Doberman women's coats usually lies with the owner. They are not the right dog for a first time dog owner, however if given proper training and exercise, they can be wonderful dogs. They are highly intelligent and several studies have shown that they are in fact one of the most trainable dogs. They are protective animals and love to please their owners, they can often become a one man dog, choosing preference to one person over all others and forming a close bond. They can be very excitable at times, so they need a handler who can be in control and let the dog know who's in command, though as with all dogs you should never be aggressive or abusive to them. They need to start training from a young age, and need to be kept active, if they are not well trained they can develop behavioral problems which has led to them being stereotyped as an aggressive dog. They can also become highly distressed if left alone for too long.

Health Issues. Dobermans have been proven to suffer from prostatic disease more than any other breed, they can also suffer from hip dysplasia and Willebrand's disease, Willebrand's is a genetic disease that causes a bleeding disorder, there is genetic testing that can be done to check all Dobermans for this disease. They are also very susceptible to the cold so should be kept warm.

Grooming. Dobermans require very little grooming as their coat is so short, however a good brush once a week will help to remove loose or dead hair and also encourage the skin to produce their natural oils that keep the coat healthy and shiny.

Living Conditions. The Doberman is best suited to somewhere with a medium sized garden, however they could live in an apartment, as long as they have good regular exercise. They can be good with other animals, although this is not always true so wouldn't necessarily be a good idea, unless they were raised together.
